True to its name, the march birthstone - aquamarine is found in a variety of stunning blues.

Legends
The ancient Romans believed that the aquamarine was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea, having fallen from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore. Early sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea.

The association with water led to the belief that the aquamarine was particularly powerful when immersed. Water in which this gemstone had been submerged was used in ancient times to heal a variety of illnesses of the heart, liver, stomach, mouth and throat.

Qualities of a good gemstone
Aquamarine belongs to the beryl family of minerals--the same family that produced clear to vibrantly colored gemstones such as the emeralds. Beryl was used as far back as 2,000 years ago to correct vision, and it continues to be used today in the manufacture of eyeglasses. It is a very hard mineral, making the aquamarine a durable gemstone for use in jewelry, be it a ring, pendant, earring or bracelet.

Aquamarine varies in color from blue-green to a light sky blue, but gems containing green are often heat-treated to remove this less desirable color. The majority of aquamarines, unlike other gemstones, are flawless.

It is a relatively abundant gem, the largest deposits being in Brazil, but other sources of aquamarine are in China, India, Australia, Africa, and the United States.

A good gift
A gift of aquamarine symbolizes both safety and security, especially within long standing relationships. Some people even say that the aquamarine reawakens love in a tired marriage.

So if you want to bring back that spark in your partner's eyes, you might consider this gem as an anniversary gift! And anyways, aquamarine is also the gemstone for 19th Anniversary and also makes for a perfect march birthstone jewelry gift.

Dazzle on a Diva

It's truly a beautiful gemstone, and you don't have to be born in March to enjoy this March Birthstone.

Just like how Charlize Theron flashed the aquamarine drops at the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards. Sparkling like the night sky, Charlize Theron accessorized her electric midnight blue Christian Dior gown with aquamarine drops, totaling 36.6 carats, by Chopard.

The biggest Aquamarine

A step-cut aquamarine weighing 1000 carats. This exhibit aims to "show how fashionably designed ‘hearwear’ can be as desirable and accessible as ‘eyewear’, and will change the way people think about hearing". The exhibit includes futuristic hearing aids, prototype headsets designed to block out specific sounds and jewelry-style units that can be customized to go with your outfit or mood.

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), together with Blueprint design magazine and the creative agency Wolff Olins are collaborated to put forward number of radical designs intended to revolutionise hearing aids in the modern era. And these hearing devices are for everyone, not just for the deaf or hard-of-hearing. These devices also helps to cut or enhance the noise that surrounds us and there by trying to avoid effects of noise pollution.

"Hearwear" designs seek to mix functional hearing aids with contemporary fashions, with some of the more extravagant examples including gold, platinum and silver components.

According to BBC, the European market for hearing aids is worth £2.9bn. The RNID, which represents nine million deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the UK, is hoping that the display will open up general acceptance of hearing aids as a fashionable accessory as well as a functional devicelike the 'eyewears' and get rid of the negative mindset related to the hearing aids.

Many products have been commissioned to the best product designers to "rethink the future of hearing products". The prototypes revolve around the mantra that hearing aids must be small and discreet, with some designs including glasses with four built-in microphones.

Designed by Priestman Goode, the Decibel protects the user's ears in noisy environments while allowing certain sounds to get through - for example, a mobile phone, laptop or MP3 player.

The Universal Hear-ring by Pearson Lloyd is a basic core which can house a variety of hardware - handsfree mobile headset, wireless MP3 headphones or digital hearing aids. The beautiful shades of green, ranging from light yellowish green to a deeper olive green, Peridot surely compliments the summer outfits.

August's birthstone, Peridot (pronounced pair-a-doe) is the gemstone for the 16th anniversary as well. Its name comes from the Arabic word "faridat", meaning gem. Peridot is sometimes referred to as an “Evening Emerald” because under artificial light it glows as a brilliant green. The purer green a peridot is, the higher the value. Any tinge of brown greatly diminishes the value of a peridot, as well as visible flaws. But this gem is surely a challange for the cutter, due to it high tension crystal structure. This stone is cut according to its crystal structure in classical table, facetted cuts, round, antique, octagonal or oval shapes.

Peridot has been popular since 1500 BC with the Greeks and Romans. The Egyptians believed that the stone had the power to ward off anxiety, enhance speech, and foster success in relationships and marriage and called it the "gem of the sun".

In Europe, peridot is found in many medieval churches decorating several treasures, including the Cologne Cathedral. Peridot use peaked during the Baroque era, but the gemstone fell out of favor over time until the 1990's when a new source in Pakistan re-ignited interest in the forgotten stone.

Peridots were especially favored by pirates. The terrors of the sea considered peridot powerful amulets against all evil, and when set in gold, were said to protect the wearer from the terrors of the night, including nightmares.

Keywords: Peridot, August Birthstone, Gemstone

Wonders of the world in London Museum!!!

Don’t forget to carry your glares as you are going to witness a spectacular eye blinding sight with the world’s biggest and the rarest white and colored diamonds lined up at the Natural History Museum, London today. These rare colored diamonds are often known as ‘fancy diamonds’. For every 10,000 white diamonds mined only one colored diamond is found making them the most rare gemstones in the world. Amongst the various exhibits, the ones that will steal the show are The De Beers Millennium Star, Steinmetz Pink, The Incomparable, The Ocean Dream, The Moussaief Red, The Heart of Eternity, The Allnatt and The 616.

The De Beers Millennium Star. This 203.04-carat pear-shaped stone is the world's largest 'D colour' internally and externally flawless diamond. White diamonds are graded by colour using a lettering system from D to Z, with D being completely colourless and Z a pale yellow. This is the sixth largest 'white' diamond in the world. “This diamond's discovery set off a small rush as diggers flocked in the hope of finding a similar stone. But the odds are strongly against another one appearing within the next few hundred years or so.”

The Steinmetz Pink. This diamond has an extremely vivid pink color that is almost impossible to find. The world's largest fancy vivid pink oval shaped, 59.6 carat, flawless diamond was cut from a crystal of 132.5 carats. It was first revealed around the neck of model Helena Christensen in Monaco, May 2003. It took two years to cut this stone as the crystal structure was so much under strain that it would have reduced to diamond dust at any time during cutting.

The Moussaief Red. There are very few true red diamonds in existence. To find a deep red diamond of this size - 5.11 carats - is astounding, making it one of the most priceless diamonds in the world. The 0.95-carat Hancock Red put the red diamonds on the map and was sold for $880,000, the highest price per carat ever paid!!!

The Ocean Dream. The world's largest naturally colored fancy deep blue-green diamond at 5.51 carats was cut from a crystal of 11.27 carats. Its incredible colour, caused by exposure to natural radiation over millions of years in the earth, makes this one of the world's rarest diamonds.

The Allnatt. At 101.29 carats this vivid yellow cushion-shaped diamond is one of the most striking in the world. It was later re-cut to intensify the color of the stone and Cartier was commissioned to design a floral brooch setting to encase the diamond.

The Orange Flame. This is one of the most beautiful stone the diamond experts have ever seen with remarkably pure orange color. The stone of such a size and caliber is extremely rare. Natural vivid orange diamonds itself are so rare that most of the jewelers would not have seen or had one.

The Incomparable. Cut from an 890-carat rough diamond, at a staggering 407.48 carats, this kite-shaped brownish yellow stone is the third largest cut diamond in existence. The cutter wanted to make this the biggest stone ever but had to sacrifice the size for perfect clarity.

The 616. A 616-carat diamond crystal that remains uncut, the 616 is the largest single diamond crystal in the world, greater in carat weight than any cut diamond known today. The largest gem-quality diamond crystal ever found was the Cullinan, a 3,106-carat monster that was in fact part of an even larger crystal.

Apart from these beauties, there are many more astounding sights. The Aurora Collection, a set of 296 naturally colored diamonds with a total of 267.45 carats. The Eureka diamond, a 10.73-carat that was cut from the first authenticated diamond found in South Africa in 1866. The Star of South Africa, a 47.69-carat pear shaped diamond which was credited with starting the “diamond rush” in South Africa in the late 19th century.

All these stones are unique and some are older than the stars. This exhibition reveals diamonds as one of nature's great miracles. Formed from humble carbon and transformed by pressure and incredibly high temperatures, diamonds remained secretly hidden deep beneath the Earth's crust for billions of years, until powerful volcanic forces and molten rock carried them to the surface. Only a small number of diamonds survived this remarkable journey and just a tiny proportion of these are of the size and quality to be cut, polished and set into jewelry.

The exhibition is the held at Natural History Museum, London and starts from July 8th 2005 to February 2006.

Related Posts:
- Reaching the stars for her (literally)
- 203 carat diamond.....phew !!!it is huge!!!!

Keywords: Diamond, National History Museum, De Beers, London

Ruby : The ultimate Red Gem

Ruby, the ultimate red gem, was long considered the most valuable gemstone. Long associated with passion and courage, ruby is the US birthstone for July and the traditional 15th and 40th anniversary gift.

Regarded as the king of gems by the sages of ancient India, ruby, like sapphire is the tough and durable mineral corundum. The ruby has been prized throughout history is mentioned in the Bible and ancient Sanskrit texts. In India it was believed that the ruby gave its wearer a long life. In Myanmar (Burma) warriors thought rubies made them unconquerable in battle. The fiery crimson color of rubies caused many civilizations to associate them with passion, love and romance. When someone said, “a virtuous woman was more valuable than rubies,” they mentioned what was the most valuable to them. Such is the charm of a ruby!!!

Natural rubies are very rare and valuable in the large sizes. Today a perfect ruby of five carats will fetch at least five times the value of a diamond of the same size and quality, while rubies without flaw or blemish, and of the true pigeon-blood variety, weighing as much as ten carats, are very rare and valuable. For larger rubies, oval and cushion shapes are in the majority. Smaller stones are most often cut in round and square shapes. The best color for rubies is a deep pure vivid red to slightly purplish red.

Keywords: Ruby, July Birthstone, Gemstone

Money can buy Love and Diamonds

It is not lately that the world is engagement ring crazy. The first known celebrity diamond engagement ring was in 1477 Medieval Europe uniting the houses of Hapsburg and Burgundy. Maximilian I of Austria commissioned a diamond ring for his bride Mary of Burgundy. But when it comes to engagement rings, the celebrity world has slightly different rules. Big is beautiful - and often very expensive. Celebrity engagement rings set a standard for luxury and people often look up to them for ideas and to bask in their glory.

Nothing holds as much intrigue as the huge engagement rings that brides of Hollywood flash around tinsletown. By now, most of the world knows about J. Lo.'s 6-carat pink diamond from Harry Winston. But other ladies have equally enviable rocks.

For Brad Pitt, buying a ready-made diamond for Jennifer Aniston wouldn't do. He had one made to his instructions. (He also designed their wedding bands.) The Aside band in white gold with .18 carats of diamonds was the result. Of course, this isn't the first ring that Pitt has designed.

Director Guy Ritchie put some personal thought into the Edwardian Ring he gave Madonna; the platinum Neil Lane ring had a decorative band and three large stores to symbolize their family.

All of Hollywood was buzzing when Catherine Zeta-Jones sported her 10-carat antique diamond engagement ring from Michael Douglas, reminding us of the days when Liz Taylor stunned the world with the Taylor-Burton diamond. Douglas and Zeta-Jones prove once again that in Hollywood, size definitely matters.

Young Jessica Simpson's engagement ring from Nick Lachey contains a four-carat pear shaped diamond flanked with two more stones, set in platinum.

Not everyone goes the traditional route. Colored gemstones are a stunning departure from tradition and often catch the eye more than plain diamonds. American Beauty star Mena Suvari chose to use her birthstones -- amethysts and citrines -- when she married her husband, cinematographer Robert Brinkmann. The stones are set in an asymmetrical design around a gold band. I particularly like this Amethyst ring from MontRED. They carry some pretty nice colored gemstone rings.

Having taken a gander at some of the recent rings blinding everyone on the red carpet, could it be more about getting a piece of jewellery worth a small Caribbean island on your hand than marrying the man of your dreams?

Keywords: Diamond, Engagement Ring, Wedding Band, Hollywood, Jessica Simpson

Bling, Tennis and Wimbledon

You need only be a realist to recognize news about tennis over the next two weeks won't necessarily be dominated by tennis. There'll be a blitz of British tradition and eccentricity, the bling associated with celebrity, some superstar sex appeal, or petulance, and then there'll be the winners and losers.

Talking about the bling.. The year was 1987 and Chris Evert, the former World No. 1 woman tennis player and the winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles, was playing in the U.S. Open. She was wearing an elegant, light in-line diamond bracelet, which accidentally broke. And the match was interrupted to allow Chris to recover her precious daimonds. From that moment, the discreet and radiant stream of light became the “tennis bracelet” and sparked a huge jewelry trend.

During the nineties, tennis bracelet was worn by a new star in the tennis firmament, the Brazilian Gabriela Sabatini. And in 2002, Serena Williams wore a $29,000 custom-design Harry Winston's Twelve to Twilight diamond tennis bracelet at the U.S. Open. But this time there was an extra secure safety clasp to the bracelet to make sure the flexible and fluid piece will stay securely on Williams' 7 and one-half inch wrist.

Williams' bracelet contains 242 colorless diamonds and totals 12 carats set in platinum.

And remember the second-skin Puma catsuit Serena wore at the 2002 U.S. Open that set tongues wagging? A blue 14.5-carat, brilliant-cut diamond ring on a platinum band valued at more than $5 million. I guess Anthony must have been so relieved—and maybe amazed-—that his marriage to twice-divorced megadiva lasted a whole year.

And hey, thats not enough. The next day, Anthony gave his bride an 8.5 carat engagement ring estimated to cost about $1 million as an anniversary present. Engagement ring one year after the wedding? Yes! "It sounds a little odd, but Marc and Jennifer were never really engaged -- they just got married. So, to mark their first anniversary, Marc officially proposed, this time presenting Jennifer with an engagement ring", reports azcentral. The company is Tulip E-Go (or was that two-lips?).

They have got some decent hardware to back it up too. The notebook is based on the new AMD Turion CPU, the successor to the Athlon 64. Too bad the round shape of the case limits the (rectangular) screen to only 12.1''. And for $350K at least they'd have RAID-0 drives!

The lineup is absolutely geared at women consumers. The round lines with the integrated handle are supposed to match a purse. The color schemes are also meant to evoke purses. The diamond and gold version is probably just the Dolce & Gabanna version of these laptops, meant to be shown and worn only once on a runway, with the actual consumer lines being much less expensive.

The point here is why do all laptops have to look like bricks? The current market of the straight-lined laptop may just be a market that is still so bedazzled by the technology, that it so far doesn't need to be bedazzled by the looks. Sort of like the era of the Ford Model-T, where "you could have it any color, as long as it was black". But this era will inevitably end, and people are going to get bored by the same old thing.

These boutique laptops like the Tulips and to a lesser extent like the Acer Ferraris, are probably the first in a changing guard. (The picture is of Acer Ferrari 4000, which is not yet released. Its a Turion 64 cpu with a shell made of carbon fibre.) Finding it locked but there still being a few lights on, she knocks. Only the owner is still there. After weighing her up as a rich looking prospect, he decides to let her in. "I'm sorry to bother you so late", says the woman, " but as I walked past I had an idea. I've already bought my husband a new Lexus, and a BMW for my son, but I thought a gold chain might make a nice little stocking filler. Do you have any 18 ct. gold Albert chains?" "I think we may have one left, madam," said the jeweller, rubbing his hands at the thought of an extra juicy sale as he went to get it from the safe. "This is a lovely one which we have specially made for our most discerning clients. It weighs 200 grams, and I can let you have it for only £30 per gram, so it's a bargain at only £6,000!"
"Mmm," says the customer, "I would prefer an old one as I believe they were better"
"Quite right too, madam, if I may say so, but naturally you realise that the old ones command a hefty premium price?"
"Oh, of course," replies the customer, "but the price isn't an important factor."
"I'll go and check what else we may have", says the jeweller, thinking quickly, and not wanting to miss a sale whose potential seems to be getting better all the time. He takes the chain with him into the workshop, kicks it round the floor a few times, beats it with a hammer, removes the fastener with its tell-tale hallmark and date letter, rubs some old polishing rouge into it before shaking it round the filter of the polishing machine. By now it is unrecognisable. He finds a slightly different fastener, and takes that and the chain out to his patiently waiting customer.
"Wonderful news, madam, this must be your lucky day. Not only have I found a very rare antique Albert chain that we must have been fortunate to acquire in the last few days, but it turns out to be in excellent condition for its age, and I have managed to find a fastener. It looks very dirty and neglected, but if you don't mind waiting while I clean it up, you will see what a wonderful example it is of the ancient chain-maker's art."
"How wonderful", says the lady, "of course I don't mind waiting, I'll be counting the money, I presume you don't mind accepting cash."
"Not at all madam, I'll be as quick as I can. Help yourself to some of our sherry and mince pies, while you're waiting".
Fifteen minutes later, he returns, glowing triumphantly. "My word, this is fortunate. Underneath all that dirt, this has turned out to be a very fine example in excellent condition. Despite that, I can still let you have it for a very reasonable £40 per gram".
"Splendid", says the lady, "how much does that come to?"
"Let's see, 205 grams at £40, that's exactly £8,200".
"Excellent", says the lady, "I'll take both!"
--------------------------
Have a good weekend! :)

Sunday Humor - Part 1
Sunday Humor - Part 2

Keywords: Sunday, Humor, Humour, Joke, Fun, Funny

Pearl, Moonstone or Alexandrite: Take your pick from the birthstones for June

June is one of the months which has more than one birthstone. Pearl though officially accepted, moonstone and alexandrite share the same month.

Pearl is the official birthstone for the month of June as adopted by the Jewelers of America Association. It is also the birthstone for the Sun Signs of Gemini and Cancer. Pearls are gifted on the 1st, 3rd, 12th and 30th wedding anniversaries.

Moonstones originated from Sri Lanka and are named so due to their characteristics of changing color of the glow when moved. Moonstone is gifted on the 13th wedding anniversary. According to a few mystical connotations, moonstone is believed to be a symbol of fertility and has cooling powers which helps to bring forth tender feelings.

Alexandrite is a very rare stone. The most striking quality of this stone is its ability to change color from green in daylight to red in incandescent light. It is considered a stone of very good omen. In critical situations it is supposed to strengthen the wearer’s intuition, and thus help him or her find new ways forward in situations where logic will not provide an answer. Alexandrite is also reputed to aid creativity and inspire imagination.

So what are you waiting for? Not a bad job, eh?

Hey, but I thought that Paris Hilton had her own range of jewelry and what good occasion can it be then Cannes to promote her own line instead of Chopard's!!!

So stay tuned for the Cannes : The Rock and the Stars.

Related Posts:
- Cannes: All the more dosage of Rocks and Stars
- Cannes: Scarlett Johansson's Dazzling Choice

Keywords: Cannes, Paris Hilton, Jewellery, Oscars

Toasty Thursday

Diamonds.. Your right hand says “Me”. Your left hand rocks the cradle. Your right hand rules the world. Women of the world, raise your right hand."
--Diamond Trading Company's ad campaign promoting the right hand rings.

DTC has rejunevated the coctail ring of the 1950s and given it a more shrewd modern association. The right hand ring defies the traditional notion of the diamonds being just associated with romance. The diamond engagement ring was the epitome of this romance. But now the women can flaunt their right hand rings.

The right hand rings have really emerged as a major trend in jewelry fashion. The right hand ring is specifically designed in a way that it looks different from the matrimonial rings. The design avoids lining up the diamonds and scatters them.
